Research
Total EV Sales In the US
Total EV sales by the thousand.
*Adapted from the Department of Energy
Auto analysts and economists have suggested that by 2035, EVs will make up approximately 45% of the auto market in the US.
Required charging apps
Getting in the field
After visiting and interacting with a Tesla supercharger, Tesla destination, Chargepoint and Envirospark chargers, I took note of key opportunities.
User interview: Key take aways
Requiring apps can add complexity and potential risks
Payment requires cellular signal, and a charged phone
It is difficult to trust new charging stations because of the inconsistency of interaction experiences.
Project Goals
Less complex payment method
No app required
Apps add complexity to the charging experience. This process could be taken out with considerations to the interface.
Payment processing through the app was a primary concern from the user interview and secondary research. They can add stress to the user, and commonly fail on EV chargers.
Easier transition from gas
Many people are transitioning to EVs from petrol, but EV chargers are much different and many times daunting to new EV owners.

After an initial CAD model, I took note of opportunities for improvement. Opportunities included:
- Proportion of the main body
- Handle ergonomics
- Interface layout
